Aubrey Hurst, his parents’ only son, was born in Toronto and entered UTS in 1910. In October 1916, he enlisted with the 208th Battalion as Paymaster’s Sergeant, but transferred to the Royal Flying Corps the next month, receiving his wings in June 1917. He served with the 46th Squadron until November, when he was recalled to England to take a special “stunt” course. After completing this training he served briefly as an instructor, but found that he missed the front, to which he returned as a member of the 39th Squadron. He was fatally wounded in January 1918. Hurst is buried in Mendinghem Cemetery near Ypres, Belgium, along with fellow UTS student Theodore Linscott Glasgow.
